SEO Tip: Naming Files, Folders and Images

I decided I’m going to start doing SEO Tips for the day. Today’s tip is naming files appropriately for search engine optimization.

Name your files so that they describe the file.

  • Images
    • Don’t: name your images image1.jpg or 10245.jpg these do not describe the file.
    • Do: name your images so that they describe them. If it’s an image of a black dog then name the file black-dog.jpg
  • Files / Folders
    • Don’t: Name your files or folders so that they only make sense to you or your web developer like projects/project1.html
    • Do: Just like with images name your files to describe what goes in the folder or file. clothes/shirts.html

Things to keep in mind

  1. Always name your files in such a way that they are readable to the human eye.
  2. The file names should give a short description of the file.
  3. Use dashes (-) to represent spaces between words in a file name. Example: black-dog.jpg

Summary

Always name your files so that they describe the content of that file and it is humanly readable.
